Accidents happen unexpectedly, and when they do, it’s common to go into shock and consequently panic about what to do next.  That’s why we have put together some tips about what you should do.

2. Switch off your car engine
3. Put your hazard lights on
4. Keep calm

It’s natural to feel shaken up after an accident so try not to panic and follow these steps.

5. Check for injuries

If anyone is injured call 999.  If neither party is injured, get out of the vehicles and move away from the cars.  Do not wait on a hard shoulder.

6. Record the scene

Take photos/video of both vehicles (where the impact occurred) and the scene before they are moved.

7. Exchange details

Take down the other party’s name, address, phone number, vehicle registration and insurance details.  If there is a witness who has stopped, take down their name and telephone number too (this will help with any claims process).

8. Fault

Don’t apologise or admit fault.  This is important as any verbal statement could be used against you in a claims process.

9. Making a claim

You can do this through an accident management company (such as Stocalfe Response) or your insurance company; but bear in mind if you choose the latter, you risk losing your no claims bonus.

10. Arranging a replacement vehicle

If you go through an accident management company, they will arrange this for you at no cost (as long as the accident is not your fault).  The 3^rd party’s insurance company will pay the cost of this.  With an accident management company – you will get a like-for-like (or better) hire car.

If you choose to go through your insurance company, you may be entitled to a courtesy car (if it was part of your cover) but be aware you may have to do with a vehicle that is less than ideal for your needs.  If this was not part of your insurance cover, a courtesy car cost through your insurance company will be an additional cost.
