New Law on Speed Limiters for Cars

New EU legislation to help crackdown on speeding on roads comes into effect on Wednesday 6th July 2022.

The European law means that all new cars, vans, lorries in production,  in Europe, on or after 6th July will be legally required to be fitted with a speed limiter  device to ensure drivers keep within the speed limit.

The devices, which have Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology, will identify the speed limit of the road via GPS data and cameras and alert the driver when the vehicle exceeds the maximum speed.

However, drivers can ignore the warnings and override speed reductions.

The Department for Transport has not currently made the legislation mandatory in the UK, but talks are to be held soon.
